Temperature discontinuity at the surface of an evaporating droplet

چکیده
In a series of experiments, a temperature discontinuity has been found to exist at the surface of an evaporating water droplet. Statistical rate theory has been used to predict the pressure in the vapor to within the experimental uncertainty during each of the experiments. While the qualitative trend of the D law is observed to be consistent with the measurements, it underpredicts the measured rate of evaporation by 21%–37%. When the temperature discontinuity is taken into account in the D law, the difference between the predicted and measured values is at most 7%. The results suggest that the rate limiting process in the experiments is not diffusion in the gas phase, as is assumed in the D law, but is the interface kinetics. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1471363#

Buoyancy-induced on-the-spot mixing in droplets evaporating on nonwetting surfaces.
We investigate hitherto-unexplored flow characteristics inside a sessile droplet evaporating on heated hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces and propose the use of evaporation-induced flow as a means to promote efficient "on-the-spot" mixing in microliter-sized droplets. Evaporative cooling at the droplet interface establishes a temperature gradient that induces buoyancy-driven convection i...
متن کاملDynamic Behavior of an Oil Droplet Adhered to the Wall Surface in a Channel Flow by the Lattice Boltzmann Method
The Lattice Boltzmann Method is used to simulate the dynamics of droplet deformation in a channel flow under various conditions. The droplet behavior has been investigated under transient conditions. For cases where the droplet remains attached to the surface, the shape deformation of the droplet during crawling is captured. It has been shown that there is a limiting value for the droplet volum...
متن کاملDynamic Control of Particle Deposition in Evaporating Droplets by an External Point Source of Vapor
The deposition of particles on a surface by an evaporating sessile droplet is important for phenomena as diverse as printing, thin-film deposition, and self-assembly. The shape of the final deposit depends on the flows within the droplet during evaporation. These flows are typically determined at the onset of the process by the intrinsic physical, chemical, and geometrical properties of the dro...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of a Single Fuel Droplet Evaporation
In this research, the results of comparative analysis of a single fuel droplet evaporation models are presented. Three well-known evaporation models including Spalding, Borman-Johnson and Abramzon-Sirignano models are analyzed using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). The original Spalding model is extended to consider the effects of the Stefan flow, unsteady vaporization, and variable propertie...

Scattering of coherent light by an evaporating droplet of pure water several micrometres in size was investigated. The droplet was levitated in an electrodynamic trap placed in a small climatic chamber. The evolution of droplet radius and the evolution dynamics was investigated by means of analysing the scattering patterns with the aid of Mie theory. A numerical model of droplet evolution, inco...
